Recycling

We operate on a single-stream recycling system, this means all clean recyclable items can be dropped into any recycling bin on campus or in the dorms. No need to sort them! The University currently recycles about 37% of on-campus waste, according to our most recent Waste Management Survey. With your help, we can increase this number.

E-Waste Recycling

Used computers, monitors and other electronic equipment that are disposed of improperly have the potential to contaminate our environment, and prematurely fill our existing landfills. Recycling or processing e-waste to extract the minerals trapped inside and reusing the rest of the components is a practical solution to solve the hazard of e-waste.

The University of Chicago has taken the necessary steps to ensure proper disposal of electronic-waste. Listed below are several features of the University’s e-waste program:

Drop-Off Locations:

• Facilities Services, 5225 South Cottage Grove Avenue (accessible via the loading dock) between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
• Gordon Center for Integrative Science, 929 East 57th Street (drop-off bin located in the west lobby).

Pick-up Service:

• Contact computerrecycling@uchicago.edu to schedule an appointment.  There is no charge for this service but pick-up service is only for campus offices or docks, not homes.

Off-Campus

If you live off-campus, your recycling method will depend on where you live. If you live in a one- to four-unit building in certain Chicago wards (including the Fifth, which includes Hyde Park), you’ll use the city’s blue cart system. If you live in Chicago in a building with more than four apartments, your recyclables will be handled by waste services contracted by your landlord or management company. If you live in a residential University apartment, Residential Properties offers single-sort recycling.
