Sustainable Travel Guide
As part of the Sustainability Plan, the University has a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated from University funded air travel. Air travel emissions are the third largest source of GHG emissions on campus. The University has compiled tips and resources for those seeking to lower their air travel emissions.
When considering how to travel more sustainably, travel hierarchies allow for an emissions-based comparison of various modes of transportation. The hierarchy orders methods of transportation from least to most carbon intensive, with the most intensive being flying and the least being attending conferences and events remotely.
When it comes to emissions, before resorting to air travel it is always preferable to utilize other modes of transportation
- Attend Remotely
- Walk
- Bus
- Train
- Carpool
- Car, especially smaller, electric, and fuel-efficient
- Fly
Travel is an important component of professional and academic development, and the travel hierarchy invites people to make informed and sustainable decisions on traveling.
For those flying with the University, there are adjustments to travel behavior which can have a considerable impact on carbon footprints:
- Fly economy: Flying economy class generates around three times less emissions than flying business or first class. Per the World Bank, the larger physical footprint of first-class seating leads to less efficient use of a plane’s space and fuel.
- Fly direct: Most of a flight’s emissions are generated at take-off, so avoiding layovers can cut out the most carbon intensive components of flying.
- Plan trips back-to-back: Coordinating travel plans can save excess emissions from traveling back home between trips.
- Pack lightly: Lighter luggage saves energy.
- Offer virtual options: Promote sustainability at meetings, events, and conferences by offering no-travel options for participants.
- See your carbon footprint in Concur: View your flight’s emissions on the Concur itinerary pages and when one clicks Flight Details.
The University is currently engaging in a pilot program with Environmental Frontiers Campus which aims to address University-sponsored air travel emissions at a macroscopic level. Learn more about EFCampus, the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation student and faculty research program.
