Chicago’s Bike to Work Week challenge is June 11th -17th. Organized by the Active Transportation Alliance, this event is free and encourages employees to bike all or part of the way to work at least once during the week. Whether a participant cycles 12 miles to the office or 2 miles to the Metra station or the nearest bus stop, each trip counts!
Winners are selected based on the percentage of employees who bike to work during the week. The University of Chicago’s Office of Sustainability will host a free pizza party for the UChicago team with the highest percentage of participation. All Bike to Work Week participants are entered into a raffle to win prizes from the Bike Commuter Challenge sponsors, which include Goose Island Brewery, Caribou Coffee, Village Cycle Center, and Clif Bar.
To support and celebrate your two-wheeled trip, Bike Pit Stops will be located throughout the city and at suburban Metra Stations. On Tuesday, June 14th, from 6:30am – 9am, a Bike Pit Stop will be located outside of Café 57 (1520 E. 57th St.). This rest station will provide free refreshments and Open Produce will give away fruit, while Blackstone Bicycle Works will offer basic bicycle maintenance at no charge. Cyclists will also have the chance to enter a raffle for a one-year Zipcar membership.
Last year, a total of 13 UChicago teams participated in the city's Bike to Work Week challenge—the most of any university! If you’re interested in participating or becoming a Team Leader for your department, please contact Katie Anson.
