And the Nominees for “Best Spring Events” Are…

This cold snap has been rough— time to warm up with some cocoa and the Office of Sustainability newsletter! We’ve taken full advantage of these long, cold days to plan a fabulous line up of events. We must have done it on an empty stomach, because we are ALL about food this year.

The Office of Sustainability is partnering with Aramark, the Program on the Global Environment, greater Chicago area universities, and local vendors to bring you a series of engaging and informative events. Our calendar is designed to broaden awareness of sustainability work already underway, and to catalyze more action through education and interaction.

To help get you psyched for the upcoming (and imminent, or so we’ve convinced ourselves…) warmth, we’ve compiled this list of activities. Mark your calendars and we’ll see you there!

At any moment: Get Caught Green Handed

Stealthy SAGE Ambassadors and Aramark staff will be rewarding people who walk the walk and recycle on campus. Now don’t go recycling that Styrofoam cup - you have to know your plastics and glass and all things that go into the bins. Get caught “green-handed” and you’ll end up with a free coffee or other coupon to brighten your day. #freecoffee #gogreenforjoe

March 3rd-March 7th: VegWeek

It’s back! After great success last year, VegWeek is coming to a dining hall near you in March. Last year, more than 100 students pledged to go vegetarian for a week – reducing our campus greenhouse gas emissions by about two tons! We’re planning to recruit more #uchicagovegweek enthusiasts. Keep an eye out for more information on tabling, samples and speakers, and a mysterious twitter user named @ChristyQuinoa. And keep asking for more vegetarian options on dining hall menus. Ask and you shall receive!

April 21st-25th: Bike2Campus Week

Calling all helmet-toting hipsters and wannabes! We’re teaming up with 10 universities across metro Chicago to bring you Bike2Campus – a competition to find the campus with the most students active on two wheels. Every time you ride your bike during the week, log it on the Bike2Campus website. Every trip brings you, and UChicago, closer to the grand prize: a four-year Divvy membership (and bragging rights, of course). Stay tuned for more details on biking-related events, freebies, and more prizes! #Bike2Campus

April 22nd: Food Patriots

The Program on the Global Environment and the Office of Sustainability are bringing Filmmaker Jeff Spitz’s latest documentary to campus. Food Patriots aims to “start a conversation about food that inspires audiences to make a 10% change in how they buy, eat, and talk about food.” Click here for full details, and join us April 22 for the screening and Q&A with the filmmaker! Speaking of food…

May 23rd: Earth Fest 2014 - Chilandia

Join us on the quad as we applaud the virtues and contemplate the vices of local food – nothing’s pure good or evil, after all. You’ll leave with a full stomach, some classy SWAG, and a fuller understanding of what it takes to go from farm to table to mouth in Chicago. Wondering if it’s local? Or if you can put a bird on it? Take our quiz (coming soon!) to find out what kind of locavore you are and if you’d survive the dream of the 90’s. See you on the quad, UChicago!

We’re always eager to partner with like-minded groups to bring you the very best programming and help you reach your individual, group, or campus-wide sustainability goals. If you have ideas for additional events, or would like to collaborate with us, please let us know.
