recycles

The bikes are back! recycles is open for the spring as of March 19, 2012.

As part of its sustainability commitment, the University is seeking to reduce single-occupancy vehicle use and encourage cycling across campus and around town. Campus bike programs have multiple benefits including building community, decreasing waste and pollution, encouraging healthy life-long habits, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Managed by the Office of Sustainability, recycles partners with a local non-profit, Blackstone Bicycle Works, which provides refurbished bikes for this low-tech, free program. The recycles Resource (PDF) provides additional information about the bike share program, its creation and ongoing management.

This past spring recycles added a tandem bicycle to its fleet, which is located at Regenstein. A student initiative led by 2 avid recycles users, UChicago Tandem project received funding from the Uncommon Fund. Please visit www.recyclesbikeshare.com to register for recycles—it takes less than 2 minutes!.

In order to borrow one of the 26 bikes, students, faculty and staff must register online. There are four bike share locations on campus and each bike must be returned the same day it is checked out, to the same location.
