Get pumped, Bike to Work Week is June 8-14! Organized by the Active Transportation Alliance, this event is free and encourages Chicagoland employees to bike all or part of the way to work at least once during the week. Every trip counts: whether a participant cycles 12 miles to the office, 2 miles to the Metra station, or 3 blocks to nearest bus stop.
Dominating last year's Bike to Work Week, over 20 University of Chicago departments participated —the most of any university—and logged over 6,900 miles! University faculty and staff* biked 53% further than the year before and 214 individuals participated.
Register to Participate
Whether you have 4 or 400 people in your department, all are encouraged to join Team University of Chicago by clicking here. Search for the "University of Chicago" team under the largest organization size (500 to 999999).
We will compete against other large universities and colleges. Bike to Work Week winners are selected based on the percentage of employees who bike to work during the week. All participants are entered into a raffle to win prizes from the event sponsors, which include Lettuce Entertain You, Wendella Boat Tours, and a family package to the Museum of Science and Industry's Art of the Bicycle exhibit.
Bike Pit Stops
To support and celebrate your two-wheeled trip, Bike Pit Stops will be located throughout the city and at suburban Metra Stations. On Tuesday, June 11th, from 6:30am – 9am, a Bike Pit Stop will be located outside of Hyde Park Cafe Inc (1520 E. 57th St.). This rest station will provide free refreshments and Open Produce will give away fruit, while Blackstone Bicycle Works will offer bike safety assessments at no charge. Chicago's Bike Ambassadors will be there to help cyclists with all their safety questions. Cyclists will also have the chance to network with other cyclists and swap war stories.
Help spread the word and boost participation by emailing this flyer (PDF) to colleagues and posting it in your department, office, or building.
National Bike Challenge
Can't get enough of two-wheeled transport? Join the National Bike Challenge! We will be participating in the National Bike Challenge, held May 1 – August 31, 2013.
This year, the League of American Bicyclists has challenged America with the goal of 50,000 riders pedaling 20 million miles from the beginning of May to the end of September. The challenge is intended to encourage individuals to ride more often and demonstrate the power of the bicycle to build healthy people, healthy communities, and a healthy planet.
If interested in participating in the National Bike Challenge, register online, identifying "The University of Chicago" as your employer. After logging in for only three days, you'll be eligible to win prizes! And the earth will be winning prizes all along.
*The Bike Commuter Challenge is open to all University of Chicago and Medical Center staff and faculty. Students who are interested in participating should email Christy.
